“The Lottery” (1948) is a short story composed by American author Shirley Jackson. Shirley Jackson is best known for this narrative which suggests a secret behind the annual event that has been done by the people in a town for many years. The central style of this story is a mystical old black box that is utilized in the lottery illustration. I discovered that “The Lottery” is a story that actually brutal, scary, and scary however the author can under wrap the true significance of the story until latest thing.
This story happens in a little nameless village on 27th June when the villagers start to gather for the drawing of yearly lottery. The kids innocently playing around collecting stones, the women are talking among themselves and the guys have their own discussion. Mr. Summertime who is the man in charge of the lotto shows up while carrying a black box and the mood of the story all of a sudden changes. The old black box consists of pieces of paper that will be utilized to figure out the winner.
After he makes certain everyone is currently there, it starts.
Every head of family pertains to the front to take a notepad then followed by his entire family, but they can not open it yet. After everyone has their paper, they open it at once, the silent atmosphere unexpectedly alter and become tenser as everybody ask who wins the lotto. It ends up that Mr. Hutchinson wins the lottery game, but unexpectedly his other half Mrs. Tessie Hutchinson against the outcome and states that it’s unfair due to the fact that they didn’t give his partner enough time to take the paper and asks to re-draw, Mr. Summertime concurs and everyone in Hutchinson household draws again and exposes it one by one; Mrs.
Tessie is the last one to expose her paper and everybody realizes that she wins the lottery game. As she protests, the townspeople, even her family surrounds her and stones her to death. In the beginning, when I discovered this story, I was interested by the title of this story. Initially I felt that this story is a please story instead of horror and frightening. When I read the title “The Lottery” the very first thing that pertained to my mind was winning a huge prize of money or valuable things, but really in this story, the reward of winning the lottery game is to stone to death by the villagers.
In my viewpoint, this is the most appealing part of the story, due to the fact that from the first paragraph I do not find the story will end like this, it describes with a great environment like the flowers were blossoming profusely and the turf was highly green, the author handles to hide the real purpose of the lottery game till completion of story. In addition, the acts of villagers are also referred to as normal activities, so I feel that this story is so interesting since I do not expect the end of this story will resemble this.
At the other hand, I believe that this story is brutal rather of frightening and horror, because in my viewpoint, this annual event which holds every year is not make good sense, every year they draw the lotto simply to stone somebody to death, even their own family, whereas the other town is refraining from doing this custom anymore. I found out that their reason of this is because of their think if they compromise one of their villagers they will get good crops and adequate rain up until next year, otherwise if they do not do it they will enter difficulty, therefore I believe it is rather absurd.
In conclusion, I also think “The Lottery” is not just brutal, however likewise ironic. The word lottery game recommends that they are going to draw for a good prize; however the winner will not get any precious prize, however to stone to death and sadly death is not a reward. So I think that the author appears want to reveal the reader how the violence happens in general inhumanity lives by this short story.
