In The Crucible by Arthur Miller, many characters had actions that were misjudged along with beliefs that were questioned. A prime example of error of one’s character would be that of John Proctor.
John Proctor is an example of one who was misinterpreted by numerous other characters in his book, and this misconception ultimately resulted in his death. John Proctor had been a guy of God who had taken a stumble off of his (intended) divine path. His stability failed through few of his actions, and his honesty was questioned. Though this was a serious criminal activity of the period that this play occurs throughout, a lot of the townspeople who claimed to be committed to God throughout the play had participated in actions comparable in intensity to John’s act of adultery. Although he had committed the action, he confessed and he did feel guilt for doing so. In Act III, after he confessed, he is asked where and responds with, “PROCTOR, his voice about to break, and his embarassment terrific: In the proper location– where my monsters are bedded. On the last night of my happiness, some eight months past. She utilized to serve me in my home, sir. (He has to secure his jaw to avoid weeping.) A man might think God sleeps, however God sees everything, I understand it now. I ask you, sir, I plead you– see her what she is. My other half, my dear good spouse, took this lady right after, sir, and put her out on the highroad. And being what she is, a swelling of vanity, sir– (He is being conquered.) Excellency, forgive me, forgive me. (Angrily against himself, he turns away from the Governor for a moment. Then, as though to sob out is his only methods of speech left:-RRB- She believes to dance with me on my partner’s tomb! And well she might, for I considered her softly. God assist me, I lusted, and there is a pledge in such sweat. However it is a whore’s revenge, and you should see it now. (374-384) He attempted to bring Abigail to justice to save the lives of lots of who had been implicated, at the expense of his viewed honor.
Abigail Williams, the woman John Proctor had an affair with, had actually been deceitful throughout the play which cost the lives of many. The young girls who followed her actions condemned the lives of lots of to prevent themselves being convicted of their criminal activities. John was a man who might see this and understand what the girls were doing, which was a great advantage over the frustrating quantity of those who did not. He had objectives to bring the offenders of the scenario (the young girls who connected with Abigail Williams) to justice, and wipe tidy the names of those mistakenly accused. However, he was continually misinterpreted and misjudged, leading numerous to falsely think he had no objectives of doing helpful for the village.
Proctor was a man who had actually dedicated himself to God, yet had the concerns of his family’s well being set above being a devout worshiper. Lots of had actually questioned him for this and his lack to church sometimes, and believed he did not care for God as highly as he portrayed himself to. This was not the case, however. John Proctor understood there were jobs to be finished to keep his household alive and well, and understood he could hope to God and reveal his love for God without compromising that well being. Part of his thinking to not attend church was due to the fact that he believed Parris wanted absolutely nothing however a quite church and did not speak of God as a preacher should. In Act II, an exchange between Proctor and Hale discusses this more clearly,”
At the end of the play during Act IV, he does choose to wrongly confess to the actions he was implicated of to prevent being hanged. However, his staying shreds of stability refused to allow him to continue with the confession by signing his name on a paper that would essentially set his confession in stone. He selected completion of his life to stay true to himself and other half over an ongoing life of a lie, as he could not feel as though he was a righteous guy. He had hoped that God would evaluate him appropriately, and decided that was of highest significance.
The matter of great or bad is extremely based on viewpoint, and Proctor came down with the circumstances of the majority of viewpoints in his town being against his favor. They chose to not see the excellent in his choice to work for his household, and instead see the bad in his absence at church. The town did not see the good intentions in his efforts to shed light on the truth of witchcraft in court, however picked to think he had a compact with Lucifer. This does not make John Proctor a bad man, nor a man of the Devil. It makes him a man who had actually been regrettable enough to have more people believe he was than those who thought he was not.
