The Crucible and the McCarthy Period
“The Crucible,” by Arthur Miller, was written to expose Joseph McCarthy for what he was doing without losing his task. Miller constructs the plot so that John Proctor, a good guy, dies but Abigail Williams, a liar and cheat, gets away unpunished. Miller ends his play like this to demonstrate how McCarthy was hurting Americans and their households. In the play, we fulfilled a man by the name a John Proctor; an excellent man who likes his wife and his household, is sincere, upright and blunt. John is a farmer that works hard every day and comes home to his spouse. Living in a time when Christianity was an extremely important part of life, john was not a very “godly” guy, and like every human had made mistakes. One significant error he had mad was being on loyal to his wife. As in the play he say “Abby, I might think of you softly from time to time. But I will cut off my hand prior to I’ll ever grab you again. Wipe it out of mind, We never ever touched, Abby.” Abigail on the other hand is lying, taking, selfish child. Abigail is the niece of Reverend Paris. Although these are just two characters in the play, the play the most vital parts on Miller getting point across through his play. In the play John proctor is a repressive of common American individuals, and Abigail is joseph McCarthy.
In Miller’s play the plot Is extremely twisted and shows how McCarthy would use several was to get people to believe what he was stating. One way he did this is he would scare people so that he could manipulate them to his will. Abigail does this in the play when speaking with the women the next day after they had actually been captured conjuring with the devil. She says “Let either of you breathe a word, or the edge of a word, about the other things, and I will come to you in the black of some horrible night and I will bring a pointy reckoning that will shudder you.” Through doing this Miller was showing how McCarthy would frighten individuals to do as he wanted. Likewise miller does something in his play that shows what it was like if you tried to protect somebody who was implicated. In the play Gyles Corey brings a paper with signatures on it stating that his other half was not a witch. However in doing this all the people on the list were found and detained. When McCarthy had started accusing people of being communist, neighbors begin switching on each other for filthy looks. This also occurred in the books when one after another people were being accused of witchery. Miller through his play was revealing us how McCarthy was hurting families. He did this by when someone was implicated, They had a choice on whether to admit “what they had actually done” or say absolutely nothing and be imprisoned. Many chose to confess however in doing so, their names were ruined and numerous might not get jobs or even buy things. Lots of could not buy loans from the bank or get tasks to pay for and provide for their households.
Throughout the play the plot goes further into was McCarthy was doing to the people of America, but people say “Why would he need to end his play like that with John Proctor hung and Abigail escaping free?” The factor for that was to impart a feeling in to the people reading and seeing his play. Showing them how McCarthy was destroying families and lives across America. So it was seriously crucial form him to end his play like this. Although it was a little dissatisfying and unfortunate, it was essential him to demonstrate how he felt and how others felt on what McCarthy was doing.
