“Of Mice and Men” Dreams
In life, dreams keep us encouraged to continue going. If we didn’t have dreams we wouldn’t have anything to anticipate each day of our life. Towards the end of the book the characters understand what has been keeping them going, just hopes and dreams that will never become a reality. In Steinbeck’s Novella Of Mice and Guy, the cattle ranch hands all have dreams that they hope will come to life. Unfortunately dreams are one of those things that you can only hope will come to life.
Lennie, one of the significant characters in Of Mice and Guy that has hopes and dreams of his own that keep him inspired. When George speak about the dream ranch Lennie gets really excited about it despite the fact that he has heard it a thousand times. Lennie discovers that having the “dream ranch” repeated to him, soothes his mind and makes him rejoice. Also, it permits him to have something to eagerly anticipate. Sometimes during the book Lennie points out taking care of rabbits. Lennie likes the fact that he will have the ability to have something to look after which they will be his own.
Also, letting him know that he will tend the bunnies work as an incentive for him not to get in difficulty, the quote “But you ain’t going to get in no difficulty, because if you do, I won’t let you tend the rabbits” (Steinbeck, 1993, 16) said by George, proves that Lennie will attempt to avoid of trouble as much as he can. Having a spot of alfalfa to feed to his bunnies is just another way to keep Lennie’s mind on working hard, and to keep him considering the cattle ranch so he doesn’t get in trouble. Having a spot of alfalfa reinforces to Lennie that he will at some point be surviving on the dream cattle ranch whether he is dead or alive.
Lennie soon recognizes as soon as he had actually eliminated Curley’s wife that his dreams have been crushed forever. Lennie a significant character had hopes and dreams that he wanted would come to life. George, a caring person that constantly needs to handle Lennies shenanigans that has goals of his own. George always speaks about how they will get a piece of land that he and Lennie can live off of. This dream kept George from entering into town every Saturday night and blowing the 50 dollars he gets monthly. “With us it ain’t like that. We got a future.
We got someone to speak to that provides a damn about us. We do not need to sit in no bar room blowin’ our jack jus’ since we got no location else to go. If them other men gets in jail they can rot for all any person provides a damn. However not us,” (Steinbeck, 1993, 14) this quote simply strengthens that George wants to work hard with Lennie so that they both can accomplish their dream. He knows that with hard work comes a terrific benefit that he will cherish for the rest of his life. George was accepting to having Sweet join them on their cattle ranch.
George’s openness for talking about the dream ranch with Candy and Lennie showed that he would like to have more individuals on the ranch. Not only because sweet would help spend for it. But here will be more people to converse with. George had blended sensations after he shot Lennie because he knew that he is the one that required to kill him which Lennie will be in an excellent location, on the dream cattle ranch! As soon as George finds out what Lennie did he rapidly understands that his dreams will not become a reality. George is a caring individual that understands his dreams will not become a reality.
Curley’s partner is a flirty, stunning woman who has dreams to live a great life. Curley’s partner constantly talks how she has dreams she wishes would come to life but unfortunately they do not. Curley’s spouse constantly talked about how she might’ve been a starlet, however instead she chose to marry Curley in spite of her mom to reside on the cattle ranch. When Curley’s other half was not wed she had met a male that informed her she was a natural and he might put her in films and make her popular, the guy stated he would compose to her as quickly as he got house.
The “letter” she stated was her ticket to living the high life by acting in motion pictures. Curley’s partner believes that her mom hid the letter from her so she would not leave her; her next decisions crushed her dreams. In spite of what her mother did she went off and married Curley; for that reason, needing to transfer to Tyler ranch, to have her dreams not come to life. During the course of the book we come to discover that Curley’s better half despises Curley due to the fact that he is an ill tempered man that gets mad really quickly.
When Curley’s wife is residing on the cattle ranch she goes and flirts with every person she sees, this is why Curley makes his better half remain in the house and view it during the day. Curley’s wife had many dreams to become and star that lives the excellent life with lots of money, but that quickly becomes just a dream when she gets wed to Curley. You may start with a dream in mind, but there are times where dreams fail to come true. Dreams all start excellent and then life takes extreme turns that will affect all the dreams you have in you life. Stienbeck, J. (1993 ). Of Mice and Guy. Newyork, NY: Penguin Books.
