Lord of the Flies passage analysis

Light vs darkness Extra # 3 “A sliver of moon rose over the horizon, barely large enough to make a path of light even when it sat right down on the water; however there were other lights in the sky, that moved fast, winked, or headed out, though not even a faint popping boiled down from the fight combated at 10 miles height. But a sign came down from the world of grown-ups, though at the time there was no kid awake to read it. There was an unexpected bright surge and corkscrew path across the sky; then darkness again and stars.

There was a speck above the island, a figure dropping swiftly beneath a parachute, a figure that hung with dangling limbs” (Golding 95). Words and phrases that reveal light/dark, good/evil- sliver of moon Lights in the sky Bright surge Darkness Stars Dangling limbs Child awake Battle fought Path of light While the young boys were oversleeping their huts, William Golding describes the island when it is at peace. In the evening, the sky is almost totally black besides the little sliver of light is reflected by the moon. I believe this is symbolic to the story and the style of darkness in a mans heart.

At the beginning of the story, everyone is confident about being saved, and their hope is by light. As the story advances, the kids lose hope and adjust to the island, which makes their hearts end up being dark and black. The little course of light is a symbol for Ralph because he is useful and determined they will be rescued. When Golding explains the lights in the sky winking, popping, and moving, he is speaking about the kids moving back and forth in between having Jack or Ralph as their leader. Jack is the dark sky and Ralph is a symbol for the white, intense light.

The young boys are indecisive about being on the excellent, light side or the dark, unpractical side. “The world of grow ups” that send out the indication to the island is a scriptural allusion for the sky’s opening up to the paradises. The “intense explosion” is a message that hope is on its method prior to darkness can take control of. After darkness cloaks the sky, a strange figure drops from the sky. The figure depicts the devil since he is appearing from the darkness. The boys are oblivious to the devil showing up due to the fact that they are sleeping and protected from the outside world.
