Physical Therapy through Prosthesis Posterior Stabilized - Thesis Example

Summary
This work "Physical Therapy through Prosthesis Posterior Stabilized" describes the comparison of the rehabilitation of two types of prostheses. The author outlines two sliding total knee prostheses. It is clear about the factors pointing to the benefits of one or the other type during post-operative rehabilitation in terms of mobility and knee function. …

The subject of our study is knee arthrosis, also known as gonarthrosis; we will explore its treatment by the total prosthesis and the postoperative functional rehabilitation of two types of total prostheses, namely the posterior-stabilized prosthesis and the ultra-congruent prosthesis, both with mobile bearings (La gonarthrosis et al., 1988).Arthrosis of the knee causes pain, stiffness, and loss of mobility. At the joint, the surface of the cartilage wears away, sometimes cracks and disintegrates, and eventually disappears (La gonarthrosis et al., 1988).Articular cartilage damage can be limited to the knee joint compartment, or to both tibiofemoral compartments or to all three tibiofemoral and patellofemoral compartments (Brown, 2009).

Studies have revealed that 40% of patients showing signs of knee arthrosis were satisfied with conventional treatment based on exercise, medication, nutritional supplements, intra-articular injections (hyaluronic acid), the use of special unloader braces, etc (La gonarthrosis et al., 1988).We will focus in this study on the case of 60% of patients for whom surgical treatment is absolutely necessary given the extent of damage caused by gonarthrosis (Brown, 2009).

In practically all cases, gonarthrosis is a disruption of the natural balance between the resistance of the joint tissues and the mechanical stress on these tissues (La gonarthrosis et al., 1988). There are two possible types of gonarthrosis:- The so-called primary or idiopathic gonarthrosis resulting from a reduction of joint tissues, particularly cartilage, for which there is no known mechanism, often called degenerative joint disease.- The so-called secondary gonarthrosis resulting from increased mechanical stress causing trauma or microtrauma, fractures of the joints, the effects of partial or total meniscectomy, or laxity due to a torn anterior ligament (Brown, 2009).

The line running from the center of the femoral head to the center of the top of the tibiofibular mortise is the mechanical axis of the lower limb. Physiologically, it intersects theThe lateral or medial deviation of the loading axis is used to assess varus or valgus deformities. In cases of genu varum the axis goes passes inside the knee, which causes hyper pressure on the internal tibiofemoral compartment and internal tibiofemoral arthrosis). In cases of genu valgum, the mechanical axis passes outside the knee which causes hyper pressure on the external tibiofemoral compartment and external tibiofemoral arthrosis (Brugioni & Falkel, 2004).
